Step Two:  THE DRAWING STAGE

I make preliminary sketches to decide placement on the paper, the arrangement of shapes, and just how dark or light each shape should appear.  I want to be sure that the final version won't have the top of the piano pointing straight into the top left hand corner. Such a strong line would detract from Grace. How dark should the piano be since it is such a large part of the painting? What color should the wall behind Grace be?  A chair and other objects were eliminated and adjustments made.

I transfer the final drawing to the acid-free sanded surface in a peach color pastel that is difficult to see in the photo.  I take the drawing outside and spray it with workable fixative.  Good thing it was a nice day outside!

Back in the studio, I begin blocking in the shapes with the broad side of the pastels. In general, for practical reasons, I work top to bottom and left to right.
